Benefits of Acupuncture for Male Infertility
I currently have a couple in my practice who have been trying to conceive for a year now. About two months ago, they had found that he had some inconsistencies in his sperm analysis. Specifically he had very low motility rates as well as morphology. Below is a table of his pre and post-Acupuncture results:
After seeing his initial results and doing a full Chinese medicine intake which included his complete health history including sleep, digestion, headaches, energy, diet, exercise, libido, temperature, and chronic pain, I determined that he had Kidney and Spleen yang deficiency.
I have been doing acupuncture once a week to stimulate sperm vitality. I also gave him herbs weekly to boost Spleen qi and yang as well as Kidney yang tonics which specifically target sperm. He also started taking COQ10, the active form called Ubiquinol, 300 mg 2 times per day. After 2 months of herbs and 1 month of COQ10, his results improved greatly. Specifically, you can see that his motility, which had been 24%, almost doubled to 44% so it is now above the normal range. His morphology, or shape of the sperm, increased from 0% normal shape to 1% which is 1/4 of the way to normal. His number of total motile sperm also more than doubled from 33 mil to 71 mil. I have confidence that if he stays on this regime, his sperm will continue to improve in vitality, morphology and motility.
Last week we added red light therapy to his protocol as there have been new studies published which show improved motility of sperm with red light therapy placed over the testes every day for 10 minutes.
We are also working with his wife to improve her fertility. She has some signs of PCOS but since she has been receiving acupuncture, she is ovulating every month. Their chances of conceiving with little intervention are looking quite good.
